Dock photo of La Laguna de San Juan Epatlán (the Lagoon of San Juan Epatlán) on January 5, 2014 in San Juan Epatlán, Puebla Mexico. Legend has it that the lagoon harbors a mermaid that protects the vegetation surrounding the lagoon. It is said that the mermaid made her presence known to a fisherman and told him to warn the people of San Juan Epatlán to stop cutting and burning the surrounding vegetation of the lagoon otherwise the lagoon would dry up. The mermaid also requested the people of San Juan Epatlán to host a special church ceremony after her and present her with a white wedding dress. Although the fisherman told the people of the pueblo they ignored her warning and the lagoon soon began to dry up. To save the lagoon, the people of San Juan Epatlán stopped destroying the surrounding vegetation and followed her other requests. After the church ceremony was completed it began to rain and the lagoon was filled with water once again. Every year the people of San Juan Epatlán host a church service for the mermaid living in the lagoon to remember the legend.
